Class Description

“Mathematical Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools” or MOEMS (http://www.moems.org) is an international math competition program. This year, in its 45th year, the MOEMS is expected to have more than 5,000 teams with more than 120,000 participating students. Competition consists of 5 monthly contests given from November to March. Each contest has 5 problems to be solved by students individually. The goals of the Math Olympiad program are to stimulate enthusiasm for mathematics while teaching strategies and problem solving for complex problems. Students will learn new ways to creatively look at math story problems. Math Olympiad is an excellent way to offer additional motivation and challenge students who have an interest in new and challenging math. Learning with their school peers and competing as a team against other national teams, motivates and engages the students. This 4-week session will introduce students to the process of the competition and samples of the problems they will be expected to solve. After the 4-week session, students can choose to enroll in the competition session that runs from October to March. It is required that your student take the introductory class before participating on the competitive team. The class will conclude with a field trip on April 25th to the MoMath https://momath.org/ museum in New York City. The agenda for the day includes: a round trip on the train into NYC, attending 2 classes at MoMath, exploring the museum, eating lunch and recess at Washington Square Park. It is always a great reward for the kids and they have a great time! There will be an additional cost for the field trip that will be dependent on the number of students who attend.
